If for whatever reason you’re wondering what my website used to look like, you can still take a peek at kimhazel.com/old. I still like those talking birds.

RIP, Old Website

I did this over a few free after-work hours when I was on Cats & Dogs 2. I had never animated a quadruped before, so I wanted to try something small to see if I could get a handle on it. It’s not finished by any means, but it was a fun little test!

(PS. If you have trouble getting the video to play, try opening it in a new tab or window. Some browsers are being a bit sassy about the embedded video!)

An Animation Sketch

It’s been a while, blog-o-mine. I figured it was time to finally post up some of the doodles I did in an animal character design class I took summer 2008 from David Colman! I still don’t have a scanner, so once again it’s cleaned-up iPhone photos. (Sorry! :<) There’s a lot of things wrong with these drawings, but I learned A LOT in the process. . . that’s all that counts!

Animal Character Design Class

Thought I’d post some of my stuff from my sketchbooks around the time of “Cloudy.” Sorry for the cruddy image quality, I’m still looking into a decent-but-not-overpriced scanner!

Sketchbook doodles!

I just finished up a little freelance gig modeling and texturing some low-poly Disney villain masks for an augmented reality company, and now that it’s online I can post! Here are a few images of the masks I made for the client. Each one of these was modeled in 1-2 days, and the realistic human head was used as a stand-in to see where the viewer’s face would be. (This will make more sense when you see the final output.)

If you’d like to take a look at the final game they were used in, click here. You’ll need a webcam and a sense of humor.

Freelance 3D Work!

I was lucky enough to work on this project for eight months as a junior animator. My work there was split between doing my own shots, and working on background characters for other animators.

Here are the shots that I was fully responsible for – except for the slow-mo hamburger eating shot, where I only did the two people in the left foreground, and the mayor on the TV by the amazing Zach Parrish. Don’t watch if you haven’t seen the movie yet! :)

My "Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs" Reel!

Here he is! I was responsible for the face and hair modeling. Textures and body model by the illustrious Sean Coleman. Can’t wait for blendshapes!

Final Character Model!

In my new found free time, I’ve been helping my friend Sean out with modeling a new character rig. I made the head (based off a maquette he made) and he did the body.

Meet Beardyface, WIP:
It’s an interesting change from my normal style of work. I can’t wait to get to blendshapes!

A wild post has appeared!

When you check out my modeling demo reel + song. I’ve been wanting to do this mashup since junior year of college.

Nothing really new here, just compiling what I’ve done into a modeling-specific reel.

Make sure you have sound on . . .

My buddy Alex went around and took pictures of all the Cloudy animators a while back, and just recently posted them up on our little internal webspace thing. Here’s mine… it was right after my unfortunate fall down the parking lot staircase, hence the butt donut and prescription meds.

… Also my cube was a mess.
